Provenance: Christie’s, Paris; Peintures Anciennes et Dessins Anciens et du XIX Siecle, Sale 5438 Lot 2; 15 November 2006 Note: (From the Estate): "An exceptional Palma il Giovane drawing, bearing a rare filigree watermark of a crowned bird or dove inscribed “Di mano Elisabeta Sirani – N: 00.” Possibly depicting Venus and Mars with putti, the sheet demonstrates Palma’s mastery of Venetian Mannerism, synthesizing the influences of Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, and Parmigianino. Singular putti poses—unique in his oeuvre—foreshadow compositions in Madonna in Glory with Saints (Chiesa di S. Zaccaria, Venice). Stylistic parallels with Peruzzi and Polidoro da Caravaggio attest to his engagement with the Roman Raphael circle. A remarkable study exemplifying Venetian elegance and inventive draughtsmanship."
