Jacques Courtois Italian 1621-1676 A Cavalry Battle brown ink and wash c. 1650 7 1/4 x 13 1/2 in. (18.4 x 34.3 cm.) Provenance: Benjamin Wolff (1790-1866) (Lugt 420), his mount, thence by decent Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, 1 June 2018, Sale 1822 lot 8675, “The Wolff Collection” as Italian School, 17th Century Note: (From the Estate): "This large drawing is executed by Jacques Courtois (1621–1676), known in Italy as Il Borgognone, the leading painter of 17th-century battle scenes. His confident, swirling pen lines and brown wash convey the energy of horses and soldiers in the chaos of combat with remarkable economy and precision. Courtois often sketched directly on battlefields, producing studies rather than finished works, and this sheet exemplifies the lively movement and tension that define his oeuvre. Comparable works can be found in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (1278.766-3), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (M.77.94.1), and in drawings at the Rijksmuseum, Museo del Prado, and Villa Farnesina. While some scholars, including Simonetta Prosperi Valenti, have proposed Francesco Simonini as an attribution, this sheet closely relates to a painting offered by Casa d’Aste Pandolfini, Florence, 26 February 2019, lot 151, sharing central figures, fallen horses, and a dramatic battlefield composition."
