Domenico Passignano Italy 1559-1638 Two Works Study for the Virgin and Child and Several Saints and Designs for Pendentives (recto); Holy Family and a Reclining Figure (verso); black chalk, pen and brown ink with brown wash 16th/17th century Sight: 8 x 10 1/2 in. (20.3 x 26.7 cm.) and 4 3/4 x 5 in. (12.1 x 12.7 cm.) Provenance: With Hans Calmann (1899 – 1982) Christie’s, London, 16 Apr 1999 as ‘Passignano’ where acquired by private collection, Amsterdam, Stair Galleries, Hudson (New York), 27 Jan 2022, lot 548 as ‘Italian School, XVI C.’ Note: (From the Estate) "This exceptional sheet presents a series of preparatory studies revealing Passignano’s inventive genius and ambitious approach to large-scale fresco decoration. The recto features several prophets, carefully designed for pendentives or spandrels, alongside a figure that may represent Christ, God the Father, or the Virgin in Glory, suggesting preparatory work for a major ecclesiastical commission, perhaps the Cappella Barbieri in the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea della Valle, Rome, where the ceiling and lunettes depict the Story of the Life of the Virgin, including Moses and Isaiah. The verso continues with studies of a Holy Family and a reclining female figure, as well as a niche showing the Virgin in Glory, arms outstretched and encircled by putti, likely an early concept for a lunette. The fine, feathery penmanship may be favorably compared to Passignano’s Allegory of Joy and Fame, recently on the art market, where swirling hair and loopy facial features demonstrate the artist’s distinctive touch, surpassing followers of Perino del Vaga. The heavy outlining of the rightmost profile recalls GDSU 9270 F v, further confirming attribution. Passignano’s ceiling frescoes in the Baptistry of the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore offer a compelling parallel, with prophets in spandrels and an Immaculate Conception dominating the central frame. God the Father, half-length among clouds, extends his arms in a striking echo of this sheet, suggesting an initial central conception later repositioned above the Virgin. Recent scholarship, notably by Miles Chappell, identifies related drawings, including an Assumption of Mary, highlighting the challenge of linking individual studies to a specific commission. Stylistically, this sheet resonates with Enthroned King with Attendants (AIC 1995.16.17) and Charity flanked by Glory and Happiness (private collection), offering an intimate glimpse into Passignano’s inventive process and his engagement with grand ecclesiastical narratives."
