Provenance: Sotheby’s Lot MWE1, 2002 Corcoran Fine Arts; Ohio, USA (provenance noted by Carter Foster, Drawings Curator, Cleveland MOA) Castle Museum (Marietta?); Ohio, USA Collection of William Paulet Carey (1759-1839); England, 1838 Note: (From the Estate): "This dynamic drawing illustrates one of the most celebrated legends of Roman antiquity—the Rape of the Sabine Women—immortalized by masters such as Giambologna, Rubens, Jacques-Louis David, and Picasso. As recounted by Livy, the episode takes place in the 8th century B.C., when the early Romans, seeking to secure wives, abduct women from the neighboring Sabine tribe during a solemn festival. The dramatic climax of the tale occurs when the Sabine women, now wives and mothers, heroically interpose themselves between the warring armies of their fathers and husbands, halting the bloodshed and forging peace."
