Its reversed format suggests it may have served as a preparatory study for an etching, offering rare insight into Solimena’s creative process. Executed with delicate black chalk, layered washes, and boldly defined outlines—a technique characteristic of Solimena and his circle—this drawing captures the drama and elegance for which the artist was celebrated. Comparable studies are held in the Met Museum and the Louvre, while painted versions have appeared at Christie’s and Sotheby’s London, affirming the composition’s enduring appeal. A work of technical sophistication and historical significance, this drawing offers a unique window into the artistry of Solimena’s circle and remains a singular opportunity for collectors of Neapolitan Baroque masterpieces." Recto: strong outlining of Christ, with a putti in the top right corner. Paper creased, Verso: faded red chalk image of St. Anthony of Padua (d.1231) holding the Christ child.
