Prouté (hippocampus drawing only) Lodewijk Houthakker (two stamps L.3893 bottom right, L.4533 back of passe-partout); Private collection, Antwerp Bernaerts Auctioneers, Belgium, 16 Feb 2021, lot 127 Note: (From the Estate): "This impressive large drawing, depicting figures riding mythological hippocampi and a sea lion amid ornamental florals and antique jars, closely parallels a sheet in the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth (no. 146B), attributed by Michael Jaffe to Giulio Campi. The work’s rhythmic composition, morphological precision, and characteristic horizontal hatching—particularly in the facial features—strongly indicate Giulio’s hand, while the influence of Parmigianino is also evident. Earlier attribution to Battista Franco is no longer tenable. Fuhring traced the source to a 4th-century sarcophagus now in the Antiken Sammlung, Berlin-Dahlem (see literature). Such motifs were subsequently adapted by Perino del Vaga and Domenico Zaga in the frescoes of the Apollo Room, Castel Sant’Angelo, Rome. The old mounting bears the inscription: 'Venise / ~ Ecole Italienne ~ / Batista Franco, dit Semolei / 1498–1561.' Comparable examples include Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, KdZ 24803, and Sotheby’s, New York, 25 January 2012, sale N08824, lot 1." Literature: Fuhring, P.
