16th Century Italian School: Motif with Dragon pen and brown ink Sight: 4 1/2 x 11 in. (11.4 x 27.9 cm.) Provenance: Lodewijk Houthakker Private collection, Antwerp Bernaerts Auctioneers, Belgium, 16 Feb 2021, lot 127 Note: (From the Estate): "This drawing is a finely executed study for a frieze featuring a dragon amidst intricate acanthus ornamentation. While its handling differs from the previously discussed sheet, it may relate to the same commission, perhaps by Giulio Campi’s assistant and younger half-brother, Antonio Campi (ca. 1522–1587). A comparison may be drawn to a drawing by Antonio in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (D.34-1885), particularly in the meticulous rendering of acanthus leaves, albeit here without wash. The dragon motif, reminiscent of Paolo Uccello’s designs, was a popular theme likely transmitted through workshop pattern books, and its presence here underscores the circulation of such ornamental models among contemporaries. Fuhring has compared this sheet with ornamental designs by the School of Giulio Romano in the Uffizi, Florence (Inv. 511 orn.), while noting that both drawings might also originate from an artist of the preceding generation. A possible attribution to Diana Scultori (Mantua 1545–1590) may be entertained, based on a comparison with her Design for a Rinceau Panel (Hill-Stone, New York). The sheet bears the collector’s stamp L.3893 (lower right) and the number ‘113’." Literature: Fuhring, P. Design into Art: Drawings for Architecture and Ornament, 1989, V.1 pg 41, no 3
