I was depressed and suicidal, having just learned that my investment manager had ripped off every cent I owned. I had embarked on a very costly project, the building and launching of a small Art Center, and was left hanging, like the Zen monk, from a branch being gnawed by a rat while a tiger with grinning jaws awaits below. The situation was cataclysmic and no solution was in sight. But I remembered in 1929 my Father came home one day and told my Mother he?d lost his entire fortune in the Crash and added: ?We?ll discuss it after I take my nap.? So I didn?t kill myself after all and shortly afterwards decided that my misadventure was worthy of a performance. I called it ?Soldier of Fortune? and used the diary excerpts within the larger context of telling it like it was?my chronically lamentable relationship with money, the loss of my nest egg, etc.?while being served an opulent gourmet meal by two styled waiters. The piece was performed at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Newport Harbor Art Museum, and Tortue Gallery in Santa Monica later that year. Then my friend Daniel J. Martinez and I got the idea of complementing the performance with a book and we did.
