Private Estate Auction, Hudson Valley, New York, Adolf Gluenstein (1849-1918), his stamp (Lugt 123) Note: (From the Estate): "The watermark (40 mm diameter) is a single Eagle in a Circle. It is similar to markings in Brique’s catalogue Les Filigranes under types 201-209. It was commonly used throughout Northern Italy from early 16th to the mid 17th century. It most closely compares to a mark used in Pisa, 1599 (EAGLE.299.1 added by Gravell), though it possibly originated earlier. These particular figures are derived from Giovanni da Udine’s designs for the Stufetta of Cardinal Bibbiena in the Vatican Palace under Raphael’s direction ca. 1516." Reference: Bambach, C.
