Circle of Federico Zuccaro Roman 1541-1609 Procession of Figures around a Bier of a Child brown ink and wash c. 1585 Sight: 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. (16.5 x 21.6 cm.) Provenance: Koller, Zurich, 22 Sep 2017, Sale A182 lot 3405 Private German Collection G. Vallardi (1784-1863), Milan, Lugt 1223 Note: (From the Estate): "This highly refined pen and wash drawing demonstrates a rare synthesis of compositional sophistication and expressive drama, inviting comparison with two celebrated works: Virgin and Child with Saint Joseph, Attendant Angels, and a Group of Supplicants in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 68.106.2) and The Marriage of the Virgin in the Goldman Collection (no. 47). The stylized Christ Child in the Met sheet, with its telling pentimenti, and the commanding bearded figures echo the distinctive character found here. Equally, the attendant figures—posed with theatrical intensity as witnesses to a sacred moment—underscore the same inventive spirit. The Goldman drawing, dated 1585, while depicting a different theme, reveals striking compositional affinities: dramatically postured figures recessed to either side of a principal subject elevated on a shallow platform, asserting both physical and hierarchical prominence. Such qualities attest to an artist of exceptional confidence and intellect, deeply conversant with the monumental idiom of late sixteenth-century Italian draughtsmanship. The subject itself—rendered with virtuosic handling and rigorous pentimenti—remains enigmatic. Its iconography suggests a biblical narrative rather than a mythological one, plausibly the Old Testament episode in which Elijah calls upon divine power to restore life to a child (1 Kings 17:19–21). With its imposing scale, commanding figural types, and masterly execution, this sheet stands as a work of rare force and scholarly fascination, fully deserving of attention from connoisseurs and institutions alike."
