A Static Penguin Commando from Batman Returns (1992) Instantly recognizable piece from Tim Burton’s surreal Gotham, this is a screen-used static Penguin Commando from Batman Returns (1992), the second installment in the iconic Warner Bros. Batman series. These militarized penguins, loyal to Danny DeVito’s Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a. The Penguin), became one of the film’s most memorable and eccentric visuals, part adorable, part terrifying. This particular Penguin Commando is a static (non-animatronic) version, designed for background and crowd shots during the film’s infamous Arctic lair and final assault sequences. Crafted in production from molded foam or rubber over a lightweight internal frame, the penguin features production-applied paint, glass eyes, and a custom-made “battle harness” with faux rockets mounted on each side. This prop comes from the personal collection of producer Mark Canton, adding high-level provenance to an already rare artifact. While a few animatronic penguins have surfaced in museums and exhibitions, static versions, especially with intact accessories, are exceedingly rare in private hands.
